Acquisition of Asian Forestry Company (Sabah) Sdb Bhd
Asian Forestry Company (Sabah) Sdb Bhd (AFCS) was acquired as our initial reforestation project. AFCS holds a 60 year Tree Plantation and Forest Management Agreement (TPFMA) with the Sabah State Government. Key tenets of the TPFMA:
- Establish planted forests as an alternative timber source for Sabah.
- Respect for native community land rights.
- Protect high conservation value areas from degradation.

Established Forest Solutions Malaysia Sdn Bhd
Forest Solutions Malaysia Sdn Bhd (FSM) was established to manage Merica's forest assets. FSM is staffed by a professional forestry team with decades of experience in South East Asia. Having a single forest manager across all asset companies has the following advantages:
- Reduction in project level overhead costs
- Highly trained staff
- Common operating standards
- Answerable to asset company Boards of Directors
Management agreement over Bengkoka and Tambalugu Forest Reserves
Gerak Saga Sdn Bhd (GSSB) was established to enter a Sustainable Forest Management License Agreement (SFMLA) over the Bengkoka and Tambalugu Forest Reserves in the Pitas District of Sabah, Malaysia. The objectives of the SFMLA are:
- Convert the wild Acacia mangium regrowth into managed planted forests.
- Respect for native community land rights.
- Protect high conservation value areas from degradation.

Awarded FSC® and PEFC/MTCS Certificiation
In 2021 Gerak Saga was awarded two internationally recognised forest management certifications:
- Forest Stewardship Council Forest Management and Chain of Custody Certification
- PEFC/Malaysia Timber Certification Scheme Forest Management and Chain of Custody Certification
Management agreement over degraded land in the Paitan Forest Reserve
AFCS entered a Sustainable Forest Management License Agreement (SFMLA) over a degraded land portion of the Paitan Forest Reserve in the Kota Marudu District of Sabah, Malaysia. The objectives of the SFMLA are:
- Convert the most degraded areas into managed planted forests.
- Respect for native community land rights.
- Protect potential high conservation value areas from further degradation.

Relocation to new Kota Kinabalu office
In 2022 the group celebrated relocation into a new Kota Kinabalu office, with space for additional staff as eye further expansion in the Sabah region.
Our future is bright!
The Merica group intends to continue its support of Sabah's vision of a reinvigorated timber industry based on planted forest timber with pressure taken off natural forests. Key group development areas are:
- Expand the net plantable area to increase the sustainable wood flows.
- Develop an integrated wood processing facility optimised for the processing of planted forest timber.
